.. take a lifetime for what has already been destroyed to grow back, so why keep ruining America’s old growth forests when growing marijuana grows much more quickly and it is cheaper? Most importantly, marijuana should be legalized for medicinal reasons. Hemp can be used to treat many diseases, some of which include: multiple sclerosis, depression, epilepsy, migraine headaches, asthma, glaucoma, cancer treatment, AIDS treatment, emphysema, and stress reduction. This list does not even include the many medicines that can be made from marijuana, it only includes the illnesses for which marijuana is used today. Marijuana is commonly used for controlling nausea and vomiting in cancer and AIDS patients that are being treated with chemotherapy or AZT. Because of nausea caused by chemotherapy, these patients sometimes can’t eat, which could kill them. One way of controlling the nausea is to smoke marijuana, but the problem is that it is illegal. So what are they supposed to do, starve? I don’t think there is anything wrong with smoking marijuana, especially if it means their happiness. My neighbor, Jason, has an aunt who is dying of cancer.

She has very little chance of beating this disease, and wants to be comfortable for the time she has left. She doesn’t want to be on all the heavy drugs. She tells Jason that she would rather be in pain than be all drugged up. She hates feeling dizzy, lightheaded, and sedated. When she smokes marijuana she feels much better.

The pain doesn’t go away completely, but at least she can function. I think the fact that she could be put in jail for smoking marijuana is terrible. It is okay for a patient to be on serious narcotics to kill the pain, but smoking marijuana is out of the question. Marijuana has no side effects, whereas drugs like Demerol and morphine have both short-term and long-term effects on the patient. The short-term effects are dizziness, sedation, itching and rash, respiratory depression, delirium, decreased heartbeat, vomiting, disorientation, hallucinations, decreased cough reflex, and problems with urination. The long-term effects can actually be more serious than some of the illnesses, one example is liver damage. Marijuana, however, has no side affects, except sometimes euphoria, which is minor compared to the serious effects of narcotics.

Glaucoma and multiple sclerosis are also illnesses in which marijuana is sometimes used. Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness, is caused by uncontrollable eye pressure. Marijuana helps control the eye pressure and keeps glaucoma from leading to blindness. Another illness that marijuana is used for is multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is the disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerve cells. Marijuana can stop the spasms from occurring and can prevent the disease from getting worse. Marijuana should be legalized in th US because it has medicinal and textile purposes which can benefit everyone. Marijuana can be used as a material for clothing and the effects it has on both cancer and AIDS patients are positive. Marijuana is inexpensive to grow, allowing us to obtain a huge profit on the medicinal and textile industries, and it can be used as an alternative form of cigarettes.

If the US government were to take hold of this operation, new jobs would open and money for the War on Drugs could be distributed to other programs. Marijuana must not be ignored or destroyed. Marijuana’s many uses are not and cannot currently be used to its fullest potential because of the drug laws. Among the most important uses of marijuana are for medical and health reasons, and textile and construction materials. The undeniable truth is that the benefits that can come from legalizing marijuana greatly outweigh the weak and unsupportive myths that keep this great resource from being utilized. The solution to this problem is to legalize marijuana and its many uses today.

By legalizing marijuana, many problems would be solved. The only way for marijuana to be legalized though, is with the support and help of everyone. Now that you have a good understanding of what some of the many uses marijuana has, you’ll help to decide. The most important step to making marijuana legal is educating the public. One of the biggest problems is that the people who know about marijuana and agree that it should be legalized are too busy and too paranoid to help.

If you are interested in helping, there are several organizations you could join. These organizations need your help with getting the word about marijuana out, so join one of the many committees in putting this issue onto the ballots and into legislatures of this country, where everyone can state their opinions in a straight forward manner set forth in our United States’ and individual states constitutions. The Florida Legalization Organization is looking for sponsors for the Hemp Re-Legalization Act which will re-legalize hemp for food, fuel, fiber, medicine, recreation, sacramental uses and almost all known purposes. One of the most important things you can do to help is talk about marijuana today, talk to friends, parents, co-workers, etc. Tell them you think marijuana should be legalized, you may actually be surprised at how many people will agree. Talk about the medicinal uses for marijuana , and the many other uses you know about.

You could photocopy fliers and literature and pass them around to friends or anyone for that matter. Spread the word about marijuana and have your friends pass the information along to others. Post fliers about meetings on campus or in the library. This is an easy way to inform people about marijuana. Mostly what these organizations need is volunteers, and funding for office supplies, printing, postage, transportation, telephone, etc. You can also write letters to elected officials such as the president, senator, or state or local officials.

Maybe even spend some time with a local group doing telephone outreach, folding and mailing literature, etc. Finally, you can donate money and resources to activist groups like NORML, BACH, HEMP, etc. I think that the best way in spreading the word about marijuana is by talking about it. Go to the rallies with some friends that are unsure about the idea, and they can find out for themselves what it is all about. Also, go to Hempfest, they are a lot of fun from what I hear. They usually are much more fun than rallies and they are very educational.

So, if there is any question in your mind about legalizing marijuana you should definitely attend. Every year the number of people that go to Hempfest gets bigger and bigger, but it is still not big enough. They need your support. Whatever you do, do it right away, This is an important issue that needs to be resolved soon and chances are that if you don’t get started right away, you never will.

During the 1960s is when this drug became widely populated among the people in this country. If we assume conservatively that arrest figures represent ten percent of those who use the drugs, then the estimated number of California users in 1967 would be 320,000 persons ( The new social drug, p.93 ). This trend has been on a roll ever since then. The type of people who use this drug is not among any certain group. Many different people experiment with this drug. Although young and middle aged adults are the ones primarily using the drug there are still some elderly people using Marijuana also, just not in as large numbers.

These people range from college students to your average businessman or women. All of these people have different beliefs towards their drug us. Some only us marijuana at parties or on weekends, and others us it every day after work or before. The reason people use the drug is not wide spread. Some people use the drug to alter their state of mind and to change their form of thinking.

Others use the drug to have a good time. The more negative reasons people us marijuana is so they can coupe with their problems in life, make their life easier. These reasons are closely related to the abuse of marijuana. A lot of the reasons are closely related, or are the same reasons people become alcoholics. There are other reasons people use marijuana such a medicinal use.

The drug can be used for many medical problems, some of which are very extravagant. Such as some people with cancer use marijuana to be able to tolerate their chemotherapy. Cancer patients on chemotherapy often suffer severe nausea. Marijuana can control it and make their therapy more tolerable ( P.1). Marijuana is also used in AIDS patients. AIDS patients suffer from many things one of which is weight loss.

Many people with HIV have massive weight loss or wasting that can be fatal. Marijuana can restore their ability to eat ( P.1 ). Another us of marijuana for medical purposes is for Multiple Sclerosis. Someone with Multiple Sclerosis is very incompetent and is in desperate need of anything that can help them in any way. Marijuana can improve muscle control for people with Multiple Sclerosis ( P.1 ) . Marijuana is also used in the optical industry as well. The drug can be used to improve the eye site of a glaucoma patient. It is also used in this case to slow down the effect of the glaucoma disease.

This medical use was the first one to be discovered. The chemical in marijuana that is known to make the affect on these diseases and on the person using the drug is called THC. THC is the active ingredient in marijuana. This product has been in the market of medicine for more than a decade. It comes in the form of a capsule.

But it is not as affective as the smoke form of the illegal drug marijuana. Medical purposes for marijuana were not discovered until about fifteen years ago. Know many people are trying to get the government to legalize the drug for medical use for the past few years. Doctors have been testing marijuana and many of its chemicals for other ways of us but none have been found yet, but any doctors believe that there are many more ways marijuana can be used to help a person medically. Marijuana is believed to effect the brain mentally. The drug depending on the dose and the person can effect the body mentally.

It can impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. A person using the drug at a very high dose can find that they are having hallucinations or delusions and distortions of images. Marijuana can cause memory loss in repetitive use of the drug. Marijuana produces temporary changes in the brain functioning; for example it interferes with short-term memory ( Introduction to Psychology P.172 ) During the use of the drug people can under go many different types of changes in there body. People tend to think different ways when they are high. This can be for better or worse depending on the person that is using the drug. The drug is also known to cause paranoia and the feeling of terror during the high.

This can make or break someone, which will bring them to make the decision to use the drug again. Although there is no evidence that marijuana users cause them selves to suffer from psychosis or schizophrenia ( Introduction to Psychology P.172 ). Among the many effects of marijuana a persons personality can be altered or dramatically while the person is high. One can become a very easy person to get along with when before they were not or viseversa. There was also changes found in a person organization. Using the Rorschach Test, these researchers concluded during the actual use of the drug, that there was a slight decrease in the subjects drive to organize and synthesize, that there was some falling off in meaningful constructive behavior and that there was a proneness to jump to erroneous conclusions ( Marijuana and personality change P.3 ) People have for many years believed marijuana to be the happy drug. Although sometimes there is someone in an experiment that has a rather bad experience these or not very at all. Usually these experiences are not discussed between people who use this drug because it is so uncommon with marijuana Should marijuana be legalized for medicinal purposes? I believe that it should be but for that reason only it has a purpose and it helps people in desperate need of some form of help.

Even though Marijuana is the most popular drug today I dont believe it is a dangerous as it is said to be. I have never heard of and overdose death of marijuana. In the U.S. alone today there are an estimated twenty one millions users of this most popular illegal drug. But that still Doesnt make it safe or good for anyone to use this drug. Bibliography 1. Marijuana: Persuasive Essay In California there is still more controversial
debate over the use of marijuana for medical purposes. The advantage with using
for medical reason is, it eases the pain, and relaxes them so they can enjoy
the rest of their life. For these terminally ill patients the marijuana also
makes them happy
and enjoyable to be around. The disadvantage is that after smoking it for an
extended period of time the majority of the patients will develop lung cancer.

That is not
so bad for them considering there is no cure for their disease. My stand
point on this subject is that it is a good idea for marijuana to be used as a
medical drug for the
treatment in terminal illnesses. The state law proposition 215 which says,
that pot is legal to smoke if you are using it for medical reasons in terminally
ill cases. This
proposition was on the November ballot and was voted into effect. The federal
law that was put into effect no to long ago, states that using marijuana for any
including medical reasons is illegal. This law was put into effect by the
president Bill Clintion. I feel that the law enforcers in California should
ignore the federal law or
appeal it in court. There is another drug that is illegal to use in any way
but for medical reasons. That drug is morphine, it is used in hospitals to
relieve the sever pain
of any patient. The reason I know this is that recently my mother was in the
hospital for a brain aneurysm and when she got headaches she was given morphine.

is just like what is going on in California, people diagnosed with AIDS and
other illnesses should be able to use strong medicines including marijuana to
ease the
suffering that they are experiencing. Especially in California where there
are more AIDS cases there than any other place in the nation. All over the state
there are
clinics that supply patients with pot for them to use to relax. Some of these
places have strict guidelines for acquiring marijuana and others do not have so
guidelines. One of the clinics or clubs(as they call them) was raided and
shutdown by state narcotics agents. The club’s name was Cannabis Buyers Club,
which has
thousands of members was the one shutdown. The patients that received their
pot there were upset. City Hall, in the first week got 150 calls asking for
help. Officials
went to the Healing Alternatives Foundation and asked for help. Matthew
Sharp, the foundation director and an AIDS patient told the mayor that he would
not help
because of the guidelines. Matthew sharp also said he “really never
liked to smoke pot.” But after he was diagnosed with wasting syndrome, the
smoking helped him
to relax and it helped he over come the nausea and start eating again. That
is another way of how smoking pot has helped these patients start enjoying their
more. There are more patients with stories like his and that is why I feel
that Proposition 215 should be enforce and not the federal law. I think that
California should
appeal the federal law for the health and happiness of the patients. That is
my position on this subjec
