Career Research of a Veterinary Technician
“Saving just one animal won’t change the world, but it will surely change the world for that one animal” (Unknown). Many people love animals and enjoy their companionship but do they have what it takes to heal them? When thinking about going into a Veterinary position, that person has to be confident in knowing they have a strong stomach and interests in the medical field to be successful. Not only do Veterinary Technicians (Vet Techs) have a passion and love for animals, they also have the strong stomachs, drive, and dedication in what it takes for this career. Veterinary Technicians are accredited graduates that provide medical care and assistance for a Veterinarian (American Veterinary Medical Association, 2018). Vet Techs treat in many different settings when treating animals and obtain many other skills. While Vet Techs face many physical and emotional challenges, their job can be very rewarding.
There are two levels of education when entering this program, two years to become a Veterinary Technician and 4 years to be a Veterinary Technologist (Bureau Of Labor Statistics, 2018). Vet Techs are an equivalent to nurses in the human medical world. They are registered nurse, surgery tech, nurse-anesthetist, lab tech, dental hygienist, and radiology tech (Sirois, 2004). The usual patient that a Vet Tech treats is cats and dogs but can tend to other types of animals. This can open many other settings for a Vet Tech to work in like aquariums, zoos, and even in research labs. Vet Technologist does everything that a Vet Tech does and more. A Vet Technologist has more responsibility by managing a hospital or office setting. They are an equivalent to a Physician’s Assistant in the human medical field. However, by law the Vet Technologist needs more supervision from a Veterinarian. Both Vet Techs and Technologist have to pass the state board exam in order to practice in their state.
